Thousands of migrants crossed from Morocco into Ceuta on Thursday, prompting what the enclave's leader called a "humanitarian and security emergency".

President of the regional government, Juan Jesús Vivas, is quoted in the Spanish press describing the situation as a "national emergency" and calling for action from the central government.

This evening, the Spanish press reports that the country's armed forces will be deployed to support the Guardia Civil there.

The Ministry of the Interior has also said Spain and Morocco have agreed to strengthen efforts to stop the influx, and to review and implement measures to deport all those who've entered Ceuta illegally.

Minister for the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, is set to visit Ceuta on Friday.
