The law on how many characters a private numberplate in Gibraltar can have has changed.

Last week, former Chief Ministers travelled in vehicles showing the years they served in the top job. Black Land rovers were used for the Chief Minister and three living former Chief Minsters’ to travel to Spain last week to mark the 40th anniversary of the creation of the Mancomunidad de Municipios del Campo de Gibraltar.

For the trip, Fabian Picardo used the G1 vehicle, however Adolfo Canepa travelled in a car with the number plate G CM8788 – the years he was Chief Minister.  Sir Joe Bossano’s vehicle was emblazoned with G CM8896 and Sir Peter Caruana had G CM9611.

The law now states Government owned or leased vehicles can have six digits instead of five following the G on their numberplates. Standard vehicles can have up to five additional characters.

Last week’s changes to the Traffic Act also allows the Government to use third party marketing of personalised plates.
