Changes are coming to sixth form education next year. Vocation levels are being introduced in the UK, with the Gibraltar Government confirming it intends to do the same.
In answer to GBC questions, the Education department says it may not be possible to offer the full range of subjects immediately but is committed to offering V levels across the Rock's consortium.
Educational needs are changing. V levels aim to introduce sixth form students to subjects that are better suited to specific vocations than the traditional routes offered.
The UK is looking at introducing the qualifications next year, with first subjects to include education, finance and digital courses.
Given Gibraltar’s educational system is aligned with the UK’s, GBC asked the Government if the Rock’s institutions would follow suit.
It says it’s committed to offering V-Levels across Gibraltar’s consortium setting at Key Stage 5. Once the final specifications are published, the education department will review them carefully and consider how best to deliver the first set.
It says it will prioritise implementation in way that supports high-quality vocational pathways and provides meaningful progression opportunities for our learners.
Existing vocational subjects will likely be replaced by V levels, with the transition also likely to include health, hair and beauty, business administration, performing arts, sport and travel and tourism.
Government says it might not be able to offer the full range of subjects immediately and it will base decisions on final specifications, availability outside the UK, demand, and schools capacity and resources.
