The Department of the Environment moved to contain a sheen of what appeared to be oil on East side waters on Sunday afternoon.
The oil appeared to have spilt onto the sea from land via storm drains.
A spokesperson said:
"Following reports of a visible sheen in the water, investigations indicate this has resulted from heavy rainfall washing residual oil from roads and hard surfaces into the sea via storm drains.
"Port authority and Department of environment teams have deployed sorbent materials at source as a precautionary measure. Ongoing observations show no evidence at this time of the sheening moving north or spreading further."
