Work is underway on legislation that will see an independent commission on the quality of care set up on the Rock.
The Minister for Health and Care said that forming a commission was part of the Government’s 2023 manifesto.
However the GSD says the Government’s long delay on the issue is unacceptable.
Minister Gemma Arias Vasquez says the commission is part of a far-reaching overhaul of existing legislation, which will include establishing a new regulatory authority for health and social care.
While a date has not been set for finalisation, Ms Arias Vasquez says draft legislation was halfway there.
Responding to a GSD statement last week which called for an independent regulatory body in Gibraltar, she said the GSLP Liberals are already well advanced in delivering what the Opposition is calling for.
But Shadow Minister Atrish Sanchez says the Government has had 14 years to deliver this reform, and is only “50 percent there” by its own admission.
She noted that similar promises were made by the Minister’s predecessor but have yet to materialise.
Ms Sanchez says the time for half-measures is over.
