McGrail Inquiry: Maxwellisation process still ongoing as team declines comment on Auditor’s Report

McGrail Inquiry | 19th August 2025, 15:30 | Published by GBC News

The McGrail Inquiry team has told GBC the Maxwellisation process remains ongoing.

These are warning letters that are sent out to individuals or organisations who are criticised in the Chairman's report, allowing them for a right of reply. The deadline for this was the 31st July.

However, they declined to comment on the Principal Auditor's report.

A spokesperson told GBC the Inquiry Chairman remains committed to a timetable where the report is to be delivered as soon as possible in the Autumn.

We asked whether Sir Peter Openshaw will take the Principal Auditor's report into consideration, as requested by Ian McGrail's lawyer.

Tony Sacramento highlights alleged protection granted to former police officers who were moved into Government jobs, linking some of these to the Inquiry, as well as 'confidential payments' made to 12 former officers.

Ian McGrail alleges this shows a corrupt "secret Government scheme" led by the Chief Minister.

However, Fabian Picardo has described these allegations as 'baseless and inflammatory", accusing the Principal Auditor of having drawn on his own conclusions, without due process.

The inquiry told GBC it is not in a position to comment on the matter at this stage but will provide an update on this if, and/or when, the Chairman considers this appropriate.
