Plans to refurbish Devil’s Gap Battery have been filed with town planning.
The Government has put forward a design to make it a functional hub for visitors to the Nature Reserve, but it will need to be reviewed by the Development and Planning Commission.
It’s hoped the plans would transform the battery into an integral part of the visitor experience in the Nature Reserve.
Devil’s Gap is connected to the Upper Town area through the Devil's Gap Steps - where the Union Jack is painted - via the Devil’s Gap path.
The plan says that, despite its present condition, it's a popular site with visitors for its views and peaceful atmosphere.
The designs aim to make it a more functional space, with seating and shading for comfort.
One of the chambers would also become a vending area, with seats and toilets and baby changing facilities available.
A circular path will guide visitors through a more seamless route.
Specific openings will be created for viewers to experience the site and understand the original military function of it with projections and props and historic elements such as the shell lifts and lighting recesses would be restored.
The planning statement says renovating the area will act as a catalyst for enhancing the Upper Rock visitor experience.
