A plaque commemorating the life and legacy of prostate cancer campaigner John Diaz has been unveiled outside the Urology Clinic at St Bernard’s Hospital.

The plaque was unveiled by Health Minister Gemma Arias-Vasquez in recognition of Mr Diaz’s years of work raising awareness of prostate cancer and campaigning for improved services in Gibraltar.

Mr Diaz, who died in 2019, founded the Prostate Cancer Support Group, the predecessor to Prostate Cancer Gibraltar, and was instrumental in promoting  awareness of the disease.

The ceremony was attended by Mr Diaz’s family, representatives from Prostate Cancer Gibraltar and GHA Director General Dr Paul Bosio.

The Government also highlighted that Mr Diaz and his wife Evelyn, who died last year, left a £20,000 donation to Prostate Cancer Gibraltar in their will to help fund GHA projects aimed at improving services for patients.

Paying tribute, the Ms Arias-Vasquez said Mr Diaz’s campaigning had helped generations of men understand the importance of early detection, adding that his family “should be extremely proud of all he achieved.”
