Rise in number of registered sex offenders since 2019

The number of sex offenders registered in Gibraltar has increased from 33 to 42 since 2019.

Of those, just four are currently in prison.

All are monitored closely by police, with different levels of scrutiny depending on the type of offence the person has been convicted of.

But, unlike the UK, the identity of those on the list are not available to the public on request.

In England and Wales, the Child Sex Offender Disclosure Scheme is known as “Sarah’s Law” . The scheme was set up following the murder of eight-year-old Sarah Payne in 2000. The law allows people, usually parents or guardians of children, to confidentially ask police whether someone who has contact with the child has a record for child sexual offences.

Police say there have been significant changes in recent years, with lots of unseen work going on behind the scenes to monitor offenders, and to prevent future crimes.

The Royal Gibraltar Police urges sexual abuse victims to not suffer in silence, vowing to relentlessly prosecute those who sexually assault children, whenever abuse took place.
