The comprehensive schools have emphasised that tablets and personal laptops are also not allowed in schools - with certain exceptions - following the recent introduction of the Yondr pouches which keep smartphones from being used.
Personal tablets and laptops are not allowed except for use by some sixth formers. Devices, equipped with safety features, are provided by the schools themselves for use by some students in other age groups.
The Government has described the introduction of the Yondr smartphone pouches as a success, and says the pupils themselves are now welcoming the improvement to their well-being.
The pouches, which restrict mobile phone use during the school day, were introduced just over a month ago as part of efforts to improve concentration, behaviour and pupil wellbeing.
Headteacher of Bayside School Gaynor Lester said the policy has led to a noticeable reduction in incidents and has helped limit pupils’ exposure to potentially harmful online content during school hours.
Education Minister John Cortes said feedback from pupils has also been encouraging, with many reporting improved focus and greater engagement in lessons.
