The Guardia Civil's newest patrol ship is set to strengthen maritime security in the Strait of Gibraltar and beyond.

The high-tech Duque de Ahumada cost 35 million Euros and will focus on drug trafficking, illegal migration, and environmental monitoring.

The vessel, funded mostly by the EU, was unveiled by Spain's Interior Minister, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, at a ceremony in Vigo. He described it as a symbol of European cooperation, highlighting its role in defending both Spanish and EU borders.

The Duque de Ahumada will spend four months a year on Frontex missions, supporting other EU countries in maritime patrols.

It can operate at sea for 30 days, cover over 11,000 miles, and reach speeds of 18 knots. The crew includes 44 officers and 12 support staff.

The ship features five decks, a heliport, two fast boats, and an underwater drone capable of diving to 1,000 metres. It’s also equipped for medical care and can rescue up to 100 people at sea.

The vessel will replace the aging Río Miño and join the Guardia Civil’s Maritime Group in Cádiz.
