The Government has not confirmed whether a safeguarding review or internal inquiry will be carried out into Clayton Busto’s time as a teacher.

Busto was found guilty of 16 counts of sexual offences against children.

Asked by GBC, it said the Department of Education will reflect on the case to determine whether lessons can be learned or safeguarding procedures improved.

The Government says this reflection should not be interpreted as meaning shortcomings have been identified.

GBC also asked whether any concerns, complaints or disclosures relating to Mr Busto had been raised with the school or Department before his arrest, and what action may have been taken.

The Government said it could neither confirm nor deny this, nor comment on any actions that may or may not have been taken.

It said safeguarding procedures across schools include recruitment checks, vetting, mandatory training, clear reporting routes and oversight by senior leadership teams and the Department.

It also said concerns are managed promptly and may involve police, the Care Agency or other agencies where appropriate.

Support remains available for anyone affected through schools or the Department of Education.

The Department also confirmed Mr Busto’s image is no longer displayed in the school entrance area.

GBC has submitted follow-up questions and is awaiting a response.
