A team of volunteers from Bayside School, the Gibraltar Baton Committee, the Environmental Safety Group and the Environment Department cleared up waste from the seafront at Waterport.

The clean-up was carried out in support of the Commonwealth Clean Oceans Plastics Campaign, and formed part of the King’s Baton Relay programme on the Rock. Promoted by the Royal Commonwealth Society, the campaign aimed to raise awareness of the dangers of plastic waste in the 74 Commonwealth member nations.

The Environmental Safety Group equipped the volunteers. It said their hard work exposed the ongoing problems at the area, with waste from trade and construction sites as well as food and drink-related litter. The ESG said while the clean-up showed citizen spirit is very much alive, action is also needed from the authorities.
