The Opposition has accused the Government of failing to protect the electricity infrastructure from avoidable failures.
Opposition MP Craig Sacarello said the blackout, Gibraltar’s third in recent months, was “not due to extreme weather or cyberattacks, but bad planning and a lack of supervision.”
He argues the Government has ignored repeated warnings, including in a press release in April and questions in Parliament in May, calling for better safeguards.
Mr Sacarello calls for urgent action to improve the resilience of the power grid by ring-fencing circuits and isolating faults to avoid cascading system failures.
He says there should be enforcement of oversight rules, including empowering the Gibraltar Electricity Authority to require contractor-funded supervision during groundwork near critical infrastructure.
