A local charity is paying for GHA surgeons to receive specialist robotic surgery training abroad, in a move aimed at improving cancer care in Gibraltar.
Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Gibraltar will pay for specialist training for GHA surgeons in complex upper abdominal and pancreatic surgery.
This includes travel, accommodation and a five-day course at an EU-approved robotic surgery centre in Belgium.
The aim is to equip surgeons with the skills to carry out these procedures robotically, as the GHA continues to develop its programme following the recent introduction of the technology.
Robotic surgery for early-stage stomach and pancreatic cancers is already being carried out in centres in the UK and Europe, with reported good outcomes.
Louis Baldachino of Pacreatic Cancer Awareness Gibraltar says the training is an important first step towards supporting pancreatic cancer treatment in the future.
The GHA’s Director General has thanked the charity for its support, saying it will help expand the Authority’s robotic surgery programme.
