A spokesman for the Gibraltar Government has told GBC there is no link between the UK/EU Treaty in relation to Gibraltar and Spain’s obligation to remove the Rock from its black list under the Gibraltar/Spain tax treaty.

It follows statements to the Spanish press by the Spanish Government’s Vice President and Finance Minister, María Jesús Montero that Gibraltar will be removed from Spain’s black list as soon as the Treaty is signed.

Speaking to journalists in Algeciras, she said the deal was “historic” and that tax harmonisation measures would avoid prejudicing Spanish business as well as guarantee a level playing field.    Ms Montero described taxation levels on tobacco as a nuclear issue that had been sorted by the agreement.

The Minister thanked the Gibraltar authorities for the many hours of work as well as for the many meetings dedicated to making the agreement a reality.
