The Opening of the Legal year took place today at the Supreme Court.

Introducing the ceremony, the Attorney General Michael Llamas told the packed courtroom he was talking this year against the ‘backdrop of a historic political agreement’ . He said it would be a great paradox if we ended up with a relationship that is more meaningful to the realities of Gibraltar than what EU membership offered us.

Tributes were paid to late legal figures Javier Triay and Robert Fischel, amongst others, and gratitude given to those retiring.

Sir Maurice Kay stepping down as President of the Court of Appeal, called it an “immense privilege” and praised the calibre of local judges. He said the Appeal Court would be “in very good hands” under his successor, Sir Nigel Davis.
