A Spanish environmental group is taking its concerns about Gibraltar to the European Parliament later this month.

Verdemar is calling for environmental safeguards to be included in the future UK–EU agreement on the Rock.

Antonio Muñoz Secilla, from Verdemar Ecologistas en Acción, is due to speak in Brussels on 27th January, where he is expected to outline what the group describes as environmental concerns linked to Gibraltar.

The organisation has previously raised similar issues before the European Parliament’s Committee on Petitions.

The European Commission has said it is aware of the matters raised and that these fall within the framework of the ongoing UK–EU treaty discussions.

The Gibraltar Government maintains that all development projects comply with environmental and legal requirements.

The Commission has also previously stated that responsibility for Gibraltar’s Eastside reclamation, including environmental matters, lies entirely with Gibraltar’s authorities.
