Students from a local school have learned about the Rock’s historical legacy through visits to the Gibraltar National Archives.
Over the course of three visits, Year 6 students from St Anne’s Upper Primary School were given an overview of archival work and practices.
During a guided tour of the archives, they learned about document preservation and digitisation: how fragile materials can be stabilised and made accessible through modern technology.
Students viewed original documents, including the Land Property Register, the Register of Commissions, and the Instructions and Descriptions of Privateers dating from 1796 to 1799. They got to see the oldest document held at the Archives: the Acta de Cabildo from 1577.
The programme of visits formed part of the National Archives’ ongoing outreach initiative to foster historical awareness and engagement among young learners.
