125 vehicles have been towed away from parking spaces around Gibraltar since November, as part of an ongoing campaign to remove derelict and abandoned vehicles from public areas

The initiative forms part of wider efforts to clamp down on vehicles without valid MOTs.

Towards the end of last year, the ministry of transport revealed that almost a third of vehicles registered in Gibraltar did not have MOT certificates – more than 16,000 cars and motorbikes.

While the government said many of these will likely have been destroyed or taken out of Gibraltar, it did acknowledge there were a number clogging up the limited parking spaces around the Rock.

It hoped this would help remedy the situation, with 125 parking spaces reclaimed, and more, it says, to come as the initiative continues.

The ministry also confirmed that speed cameras around Gibraltar, which were out of commission for three months last year, had been reinstated as from August
