Europe Minister Stephen Doughty has described the findings of the McGrail Inquiry as “extremely serious” and “deeply concerning”

Mr Doughty was answering a written question from Labour MP Tom Hayes, who asked how the UK would respond to the Inquiry’s findings that described “grossly improper” and “sinister” interventions relating to national security.

In his response, Mr Doughty said Sir Peter Openshaw’s report contained findings that must be “urgently addressed”.

Mr Doughty said the Inquiry and its conclusions are primarily the responsibility of Gibraltar’s own institutions, including the Government, Parliament and Judiciary, under existing constitutional arrangements.

However, he stressed that the UK Government expects the Government of Gibraltar to implement the necessary reforms “quickly and fully”.

He added that the UK stands ready to support Gibraltar in strengthening its institutions and will take further action if required to ensure good governance across the Overseas Territories.
