Heritage Trust welcomes plans to restore The Mount & safeguard its future

The Heritage Trust has welcomed the Government’s Expression of Interest for the restoration and re-purposing of The Mount.

It describes it as a significant step forward in the recovery of what it calls one of Gibraltar’s most important historic estates.

The Heritage Trust says the focus on restoring the Main Residence, alongside consultation with heritage and environmental bodies, is an encouraging sign of conservation-led regeneration.

It says Trustees visited the Mount in October and reiterated their support for a carefully managed, phased programme of works. The Trust said it notes that recent improvements in parts of the estate have already demonstrated the value of careful stewardship, but stress that the Main Residence still requires urgent attention.

The Trust maintains that securing an appropriate long-term use will be essential to safeguarding the building’s character and its historic landscape. As proposals evolve, it says it looks forward to working constructively with the Government and prospective applicants to help ensure The Mount is restored with the sensitivity and sustainability the site deserves.
