Parliament met briefly on Thursday for a motion to appoint Nicky Guerrero as Mayor and Andrea Simpson as Deputy Mayor.

The appointments, supported unanimously, will take effect on Tuesday.

Thursday’s meeting began with the House wishing the Chief Minister a speedy and full recovery.

Unlike the last motion debated in Parliament this one was an ‘easy one’ in-keeping with the festive season and the spirit of goodwill.

Presented by the Deputy Chief Minister in Fabian Picardo’s absence, the house was in total agreement that the role was tailor made for Nicky Guerrero.  He becomes Gibraltar’s 21st Mayor, following in the footsteps of Sir Joshua Hassan, the first Gibraltarian to hold the role.

Praise for Andrea Simpson was equally forthcoming with praise from both the Opposition and from former Mayor Christian Santos.

And the House was equally complimentary of Carmen Gomez.  Parliament was again unanimous in its thanks, praising how she had carried out the role and had persevered despite having been unwell.

And with that the House broke up for Christmas till the 13th of January- we in the newsroom took the news with plenty of good cheer at the prospect of a holiday season with Parliamentary silent nights.
