The Partido Popular of Cádiz has tabled a proposal in the Andalusian Parliament calling for La Línea to be included in the planned Nerja-to-Algeciras rail corridor.
The party argues that with the Gibraltar frontier set to be dismantled, new infrastructure planning is now essential.
The Mayor of La Línea, Juan Franco, has been advocating for the town’s inclusion in the proposed rail corridor from Nerja to Algeciras for years. He has said that La Línea has historically been excluded from rail infrastructure projects, despite having a population of more than 60,000 residents and despite ebing an important cross-border city.
Now, the Partido Popular of Cádiz has amplified that message by taking the proposal to the Junta de Andalucía.
In its motion, the party referenced Brexit and the Gibraltar Treaty. It argued that, with the planned removal of the frontier, a wider urban area which would include the residents of Gibraltar, would bring the total population to around 130,000 people.
The party says this requires infrastructure planning aligned with a more integrated cross-border reality.
The proposal is non-binding and would ultimately require approval from Spain’s central government. However, it signals growing political momentum in Andalucía to plan infrastructure on the assumption of closer cross-border integration with Gibraltar.
